The IRCC Processes TRVs for Spouses Within 30 Days With a 90% Approval Rate
According to the latest update by IRCC, the processing times for Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) for spouse applicants is now 30 days The restriction is applicable to spouses who have already applied for Canadian permanent residence. Also, applicants no longer have to wait for the IRCC’s decision in their home countries; instead, they can now go to Canada while their application is being processed.
Understanding the Spousal TRV Application Process
Under the Spousal TRV, foreign nationals are permitted to travel to Canada to be with their spouse who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. It is a temporary visa that has particular restrictions and paperwork.
With the IRCC’s recent announcement on TRV’s processing times, it implies that Canadians or permanent residents with spouses and dependents living abroad will be able to connect with them more quickly and start settling in their new locations.
Until they are granted permanent residency or receive a work or study visa, spouses and dependents on a TRV are not permitted to work or study in Canada.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser revealed the service requirement on May 26 in Vancouver. He continued by stating that spousal candidates had a TRV approval rating of above 90%. Minister Fraser also emphasized how the IRCC is increasingly using cutting-edge analytics to screen TRV applications. Using this technology, the department is able to examine a variety of aspects of an applicant’s application to assess their likelihood of being allowed for permanent residency and classify them into a group that IRCC officers will find easier to approve.
The Time it Takes to Process a Family Class Sponsorship
Permanent residence applications under family class sponsorship generally take 12 months to process. However, because spousal TRVs are now processed in 30 days and IRCC has a service standard of 60 days for work permits, it could take as little as three months (90 days) for a sponsored spouse, partner, or dependent child to arrive in Canada and begin working while they await IRCC’s decision on their permanent resident application.
Other Family Reunification Initiatives
The TRV statement was issued alongside another, stating that spouse applicants and their dependent children who stay in Canada with their sponsor and have temporary residence status may be eligible for open work permits. They may apply for an Open Work Permit once they have completed an application for permanent residence with IRCC.
