Quebec Enforces Cap on Family Sponsorship Applications

The Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) of Quebec has implemented a new cap on family sponsorship applications for immigration. Effective from June 26, 2024, to June 25, 2026, the cap restricts the total number of applications to 13,000.

Under this cap, 10,400 applications are allocated for sponsoring spouses, common-law spouses, and dependent children aged 18 and over. An additional 2,600 applications are designated for other eligible relatives. However, certain categories are exempt from this cap, including dependent minor children, children for adoption, and dependent adult children due to disability.

MIFI will announce when the cap is reached, at which point any non-exempt applications received beyond this limit will be returned without processing or charging fees. This measure aims to manage the volume of applications effectively and ensure a more streamlined process for family sponsorship in Quebec.

The cap on family sponsorship applications reflects Quebec’s effort to balance its immigration system and address processing times, while still prioritizing certain categories to maintain family unity and support vulnerable applicants.
