Phone Services

According to Canada’s Price Comparison Study of Telecom Services, both wireless and home internet services in Canada have become more affordable in 2022. The report reveals that wireless prices declined by an average of 2.6% across all levels, with up to a 16% decline for the largest data plans. Home internet prices either remained stable or declined, with an 11% decline recorded for mid-range plans. These developments are particularly positive for immigrants who tend to initially earn less income than the average Canadian.

Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index data shows that prices for cellular services have declined almost 30% from 2019 to 2022. This decline in telecom prices is especially beneficial for Canadian immigrants who rely on these services for many reasons. They need to utilize the internet to find work, call friends and family, and access social media platforms to stay connected.

According to a Century Initiative study, in 2018, the median income for immigrants after five years in Canada was $7,300 less than the median income of all Canadians. In 2019, Canadian immigrants reported a median wage that was 18% lower than Canadian-born workers. Therefore, affordable goods and services are essential for newcomers to Canada to live comfortably as they acclimate to life in a new country.

The decrease in telecom prices will make it easier for immigrants to take advantage of online tools like social media as they look to build careers and create social connections. According to a 2022 survey of Canadian immigrants, social media is the primary source of news for 42% of the respondents. Additionally, 31% of respondents who utilized social media did so through “six or more platforms.” Social media platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook can help immigrants find job opportunities, connect with other newcomers and find events in their local community. They can also learn about Canada and embrace Canadian culture through videos and media on YouTube or TikTok.

The decreasing prices of telecom services in Canada are good news for all Canadians, especially immigrants who need these services to build careers and social connections. Affordable goods and services are paramount for Canadian immigrants as they adjust to life in a new country, and telecom services are no exception. As the cost of telecom services continues to decline, it is hoped that newcomers to Canada will find it easier to thrive and feel at home in their new country.
