Immigration Announcement
IRCC Processing Times Show Mixed Results in July 2026 Update
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) published its latest processing time update on July 2, 2026, and the results are a mixed bag depending on where you are applying from and what kind of application you have filed. Work permits kept improving for applicants inside Canada, super visa waits fell sharply for applicants in India, and visitor visa processing sped up for several countries. At the same time, study permits slowed down for applicants inside Canada and India, and super visa waits stretched noticeably longer for the United States.
Work Permits Keep Getting Faster
In Canada applications saw the biggest improvement in this update, with processing times falling by 15 days to 129 days, the fastest pace recorded so far this year. Nigeria based applicants also gained a one week improvement, down to 8 weeks. Other countries held steady: India and the Philippines remained at 9 weeks and 8 weeks respectively, Pakistan stayed at 5 weeks, and the United States held at 4 weeks. IRCC’s service standard for in Canada work permit submissions is 120 days, meaning the current 129 day average is now very close to target.
Study Permits Move In The Other Direction
Study permits told a less encouraging story this round. Processing for applicants inside Canada rose from 6 to 7 weeks, and India based applications also climbed by a week, from 4 to 5 weeks. No country saw a decline in study permit processing in this update. Pakistan, Nigeria, the United States, and the Philippines all held at their previous levels, ranging from 4 to 6 weeks.
Visitor Visas And Super Visas
Visitor visa processing shortened for applicants from Canada, India, and Pakistan, while Nigeria and United States based applicants saw modest increases. Super visas moved the most dramatically of any category this round: India based applicants gained over two weeks of improvement, dropping from 66 to 50 days, while United States based applicants lost nearly three weeks, climbing from 104 to 123 days. The Philippines and Pakistan both saw smaller increases in super visa wait times, while Nigeria improved slightly.
| Category | Fastest Improvement | Biggest Increase |
| Work permits | Canada, down 15 days | None reported |
| Study permits | None reported | Canada and India, up 1 week |
| Visitor visas | Canada, India, Pakistan | Nigeria, United States |
| Super visas | India, down 16 days | United States, up 19 days |
Processing Times Versus Service Standards
It is worth remembering that IRCC’s published processing times and its service standards measure two different things. Processing times reflect either historical performance, based on how long it has actually taken to finalize 80 percent of past applications, or forward-looking estimates based on current volumes and capacity. Service standards, by contrast, are internal targets for how quickly IRCC aims to finalize applications under normal conditions, and they are updated far less often; some temporary residence standards have not changed since 2018 or 2019. In practice, this means an application can land faster or slower than the published processing time depending on individual circumstances, backlog conditions, and the complexity of a given file.
What Applicants Should Take Away
If you are planning a work permit application from within Canada, current wait times are the best they have been all year, which is good news for anyone extending status or switching employers. Study permit applicants, especially those already in Canada or applying from India, should build a longer runway into their plans given the recent increase. Super visa applicants in the United States should also expect a longer wait than earlier this summer and plan accordingly, particularly if the visit is tied to a specific date.
