Quebec has decided to relax PEQ rules that were declared in May
The Government of Quebec has decided to make some amendments to the PEQ reforms that were declared last May. These reforms will affect both foreign students and temporary foreign workers.
Nadine Girault, Quebec’s new immigration minister, said that people who graduate in 2020 would be allowed to follow the rules that are currently in effect when it comes to accessing the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ).
The students who are living in Quebec will be able to submit their applications under the rules that are currently in place before the enforcement of the new regulations as long as they satisfy a particular condition. They must have already received a diploma that is eligible for the PEQ or will obtain it by the end of this year, which is by 31st December 2020.
Developments:
The Government of Quebec had introduced strict rules for the PEQ back in May. They increased the work experience requirement from the 12 months to 36 months for temporary foreign workers (TFWs) who want to be eligible for the PEQ. The work experience requirement has now been fixed at 24 months. Quebec had also introduced work experience requirements for international students, ranging from 12 to 24 months, depending on their specific program of study.
However, the recent announcement states that the work experience requirements and duration for students will not be as harsh. The work experience gained through a mandatory internship because of their program of study will be taken into consideration. Full-time work of 3 months will be sufficient for them.
These changes will take place on July 22, 2020. The current conditions for PEQ eligibility will apply until the new regulations are introduced. The applications that are submitted before the new regulations come into force will be evaluated on the basis of the current requirements.
