New Immigrants

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) declared that Canada’s admission of permanent residents broke all previous records in 2022. According to the IRCC, the country admitted nearly 437,000 new immigrants last year. This surpasses the goal they had set of 431,645 new immigrants and sets a historical high for the number of people admitted to Canada for PR in a calendar year.

What Immigration Minister has said?

Sean Fraser, the Canadian immigration minister said, “It is evidence of the fortitude and resiliency of our nation and its citizens. The ability of newcomers to fill labour shortages, contribute fresh ideas and talents to our communities, and improve society at large is crucial. In 2023, as we continue to welcome newcomers, I am eager to see what the future holds and look forward to another historic year”.

IRCC Continues to Clear the Backlog of Applications

In 2022, the IRCC handled 5.2 million applications across all business lines. This is twice as many applications as were processed in 2021 and comprises applications for citizenship, temporary residency, and permanent residence. In the Fall Economic Statement, the government promised $50 million to IRCC to help with the continued backlog of applications, which is currently 1.09 million.

Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025

The yearly Immigration Levels Plan outlines Canada’s admission goals. Until the announcement of the 2023–2025 immigration new plan, the year 2022 had the highest admittance goals ever. Immigration affects Canada’s labour force growth by 100%. Immigration also contributes to roughly 75% of Canada’s population increase.

In recent years, Canada has worked to increase the number of immigrants it accepts in order to increase its population. Between 2016 and 2021, 1.3 million new permanent residents entered Canada, according to the immigration census of 2021. In other words, one in four responders were or had been landed immigrants or Canadian permanent residents. By 2036, it’s anticipated that immigrants would make up 36% of Canada’s population.

Looking ahead, the 500,000 new permanent residents per year goal set forth in the immigration levels plan 2023–2025, which was in November, is even more ambitious.
