Canada Expands Student Work Placement Program With 40,000 New Opportunities
In a major move to bridge the gap between education and real-world employment, Canada has announced an expansion of its Student Work Placement Program (SWPP), adding 40,000 new work opportunities for post-secondary students. With a massive $207.6 million investment through Budget 2024, this expansion aims to provide more students with the tools they need to transition smoothly into the workforce.
The announcement was made by Minister of Jobs and Families Steven MacKinnon, who emphasized the need for practical experience in shaping career-ready graduates. These placements are not just traditional co-ops or internships—they include micro-internships, virtual work, hackathons, and multidisciplinary projects, offering flexibility and real-time exposure across many industries.

This expansion is designed to support students from all fields and all corners of Canada. So far, the program has reached 87% of post-secondary institutions nationwide and funded over 249,000 placements since its inception in 2017. In the 2023-24 year alone, more than 57,000 placements were made available.
