Express Entry Skilled Trades Draw Hits 3,500 ITAs
Skilled trades just got a big win. On October 1, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its second trades occupation draw of the year. It issued 3,500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in round 447. The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score was 476. That is one point lower than the previous trades draw on April 2, 2026. It is also the largest trades draw since the category began in 2023.

What stands out in this draw
Size is the headline. In April, IRCC invited 3,000 candidates at a score of 477. Five months later, it invited 3,500 and the cut off barely moved.
That tells us IRCC is keeping a steady pace for trades. The total for trades this year now stands at 6,500 ITAs. Compare that with 2,500 in 2023, 3,600 in 2024 and 1,250 in 2025. Across all draws this year, Canada has issued 135,215 ITAs in 59 Express Entry rounds.
The occupation mix has also changed. Cooks were removed from the trades category before the April draw. Invitations now flow to a wider range of trades, such as electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters and heavy equipment operators in construction and industry.
Why Canada is backing the trades
The federal Spring Economic Update set a bold aim. Canada plans to recruit and train 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers by 2030. The focus is housing, infrastructure and defence. New funding for apprenticeships and paid training pathways supports that push.
Many provinces are also prioritizing candidates with trades experience. So IRCC likely gets trades talent through several economic programs. That makes it hard to predict another category draw. Candidates should not wait on a single signal.
What this means for you
If you received an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application. Do not wait until week eight. Gather police certificates, medicals, proof of work and language results early.
If your score is below 476, you still have options. A provincial nomination adds 600 points and makes an ITA almost certain in a future draw. Retaking a language test can raise points. Adding a second official language result can help too.
IRCC is also reforming Express Entry and the CRS. One proposal would award extra points for Red Seal certification instead of any Certificate of Qualification. If you are a tradesperson planning to enter the pool, put your certification in place first.
How category based draws work
Express Entry normally ranks everyone in the pool by CRS score. Category based draws work differently. IRCC invites top scoring candidates who meet a specific priority, such as French language skills, health care work or skilled trades.
To be considered for the trades category, you must have recent qualifying work experience in an eligible trade occupation, and you must meet the usual Express Entry rules. Your profile must show the right National Occupational Classification code and enough experience.
Your 60 day action plan after an ITA
Week one, confirm your documents list in your online account. Week two, book medical and police checks. Weeks three to five, collect proof of work, reference letters and language results. Weeks six and seven, review everything for errors. Week eight, submit.
This simple calendar prevents rushed mistakes. A complete application also avoids delays and refusals that come from missing documents. If anything looks unclear, ask a licensed professional before you submit.
The bottom line on trades
Canada needs tradespeople, and the data shows it. A 3,500 invitation round, a rising yearly total and a national training goal all point the same way. Candidates who certify early, polish their language scores and explore provincial routes will stand in the best position when the next opportunity arrives.
Keep your Express Entry profile active and accurate. Update it whenever your work experience, language results or certifications change. Small updates can add valuable CRS points over time.
We see this draw as proof that Canada wants builders. Housing and infrastructure need hands, and the system is responding. Still, a 476 cut off is high. Many strong tradespeople will need extra points.
Consider an illustrative case. An electrician with five years of experience scores 455. He retakes his language test, lifts his speaking band and begins the Red Seal route. That could add the points he needs while keeping a provincial nomination in reach. This example is hypothetical.
Our advice is to build a layered plan. Combine certification, language and provincial research. Consider a personal CRS review with a licensed immigration professional.
