Alberta Leads Canada in Population Growth through Interprovincial Migration

Despite a slower start in 2024, Alberta is leading Canada in population growth through interprovincial migration. The province saw a net gain of 12,482 people in the first quarter of 2024, making it one of only three provinces to experience such an increase. Although the number of migrants to Alberta in Q1 2024 was 8.9% lower than in the same period in 2023, the province continues to attract new residents, marking its 11th consecutive quarter of net gains.

This trend is a significant turnaround for Alberta, which experienced population losses in 19 out of 24 quarters from the third quarter of 2015 to the second quarter of 2021. The current growth is largely driven by people relocating from Ontario and British Columbia, highlighting Alberta’s appeal as a destination for those seeking new opportunities and a better quality of life.

The steady increase in population is a positive sign for Alberta’s economic and social landscape. It reflects the province’s ability to attract and retain residents, contributing to its vibrant communities and dynamic workforce. The influx of new residents brings diverse skills and experiences, further enriching Alberta’s cultural and economic fabric.

The province offers a range of opportunities in various sectors, including energy, technology, healthcare, and education, making it an appealing choice for individuals and families looking to relocate.

As Alberta continues to grow, it remains committed to supporting its residents and providing the necessary infrastructure and services to accommodate the increasing population. The province’s ability to adapt and thrive amidst changing circumstances underscores its strong potential for continued growth and prosperity.
