Self-Employed Persons Programs

In a move aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing processing IRCC backlogs, Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced significant updates to Canada’s Start-Up Visa and Self-Employed Persons programs. These changes, set to take effect from April 30th, 2024, signify a proactive approach by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Updating the Start-Up Visa Program

Under the revamped Start-Up Visa program, IRCC will implement several key changes to streamline IRCC application processing and prioritize high-potential ventures.

  • Effective April 30th, the department will cap the number of permanent residents accepted under this program, ensuring a more focused approach to evaluating entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Additionally, priority processing will be accorded to entrepreneurs whose start-ups receive support from Canadian capital or business incubators affiliated with Canada’s Tech Network.

A Pause on Self-Employed Persons Program

In response to prolonged processing times and a backlog of applications, IRCC has announced a temporary pause on application intake for the Self-Employed Persons program until the end of 2026. This measure aims to address the existing backlog while enabling the department to explore opportunities for program reform without compromising its integrity. Despite the pause, IRCC remains committed to finalizing pending applications and ensuring a fair and transparent process for aspiring self-employed individuals.

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has faced a significant backlog in processing immigration applications, posing challenges for both applicants and the department itself. However, IRCC is proactively addressing these issues by implementing strategic measures to mitigate the backlog and streamline immigration processes.

One key strategy employed by IRCC involves limiting application intake until the end of 2026. By doing so, IRCC aims to focus its resources on clearing existing backlogs and improving overall processing efficiency. This measure allows the department to better manage the influx of applications and reduce wait times for applicants.

Furthermore, IRCC is allocating additional admissions for the federal business category in accordance with the multi-year levels plan for 2024–2026. This strategic approach ensures a balanced intake of immigrants while addressing backlog challenges within specific immigration streams, such as the Start-up Visa Program.

Current IRCC Processing Times

It’s essential to note the current processing times for key immigration programs. Presently, the processing time for:
