Episode 12 – Support for Sudanese Relatives, Ukrainians Seeking PR, and Immigration Plan Consultations
Get the latest updates on immigration measures for relatives of Canadians from Sudan, calls from displaced Ukrainians for easier pathways to permanent residency, and public consultations for Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan.
Assistance for Relatives from Sudan
Canada extended measures until October 27, 2024 to help immediate families of Canadians who left Sudan due to violence:
– Fee-exempt temporary resident permits
– Upon arrival, fee-exempt work/study permits
– Fee-exempt permanent residence applications (family class)
Ukrainians Want Streamlined Path to PR
Ukrainians in Canada urgently seek easier permanent residency pathways, as current programs don’t fit their refugee situation. The temporary Canada-Ukraine travel program ended in March. Economic streams require English fluency, youth, Canadian degrees, and work experience – barriers for many refugees. Only 7% qualify under the program for those with family in Canada.
Immigration Levels Plan Consultations
IRCC launched public consultations for the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan to be unveiled in November. For the first time, there will be separate targets for new temporary and permanent residents. Canadians, stakeholders, and experts can provide input until June 30, 2024 to help shape immigration planning.
