Rising Asylum Claim Costs
Canada faces major costs due to record asylum claims – $224 per claimant daily for necessities. There are currently 156,032 pending claims. The Interim Housing Assistance Program for 7,000 claimants costs $557 million annually. Despite Roxham Road’s closure, 42,387 refugee claims remain pending from 2023.
Yukon’s Francophonie Day
On May 15, Yukon celebrated Francophonie Day. Minister Streicker urged appreciating French language and Francophone culture’s diversity. He thanked the Commissioner, organizations, artists, volunteers, and businesses nurturing Yukon’s vibrant Francophone community.
Declining Immigrant Naturalization
The 2021 Census showed a drop in recent immigrants’ naturalization rates, concerning the government. Factors like income, language, education level, and source country dual citizenship restrictions impact this trend. Some postpone naturalizing for economic reasons. Efforts include digitizing applications and using AI for routine processing.
