Ontario and Quebec show significant employment gains in December according to new Labour Force Survey

The Canadian economy managed to create about 320,000 jobs in 2019. As a result, December marked employment gains in multiple provinces. Ontario and Quebec profited the most from the employment gains as compared to the other provinces. Statistics Canada released its latest Labour Force Survey, which covers the developments of December.

Canada’s private sector had 57,000 employees in December. The rate of employment rose in accommodation and food services, along with the construction industry. Quebec led from the front, and there was an employment growth of 25000 in the accommodation and food services industry. On the other hand, British Columbia and Ontario had the most to contribute when it came to the growth in the construction industry. Together, they added 17,000 jobs.

Canada witnessed 320,000 more people getting employment between December 2018 and December 2019. The employment rate growth picked up, especially in the first three quarters of the year.

Ontario saw 25,000 more residents employed in the month of December because of the gains in full-time work. The public administration and construction industries saw maximum development. Employment in Ontario rose by 243,000 as compared to December 2018.

Quebec saw the employment rising by 21,000, and there were more Quebecers getting jobs in accommodation and food services. The manufacturing industry also received a boost.

Manitoba created 2,800 additional jobs for its labor force. The gains can be attributed to the more part-time jobs taken on by the youth population.

Prince Edward Island witnessed 1,100 more jobs in the month of December, and it was the first significant increase is almost six months. The province ended the year with 4,600 more jobs. Nova Scotia noted an employment gain of 6,700 in the year leading up to December 2019. The health care and social assistance sector made significant contributions.
