New Economic Immigration Model

Newfoundland and Labrador has officially launched its revised economic immigration approach with the first round of invitations issued through the province’s Expression of Interest (EOI) model. This marks a new phase in streamlining immigration pathways tailored to the province’s labour market needs.

A total of 256 candidates were invited in this initial round. Of these, 206 were selected under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP), while 50 were invited through the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). All recipients had job offers aligned with specific labour market demands in Newfoundland and Labrador and are now eligible to apply for a provincial nomination or program endorsement.

Selection Focused on Labour Demand and Local Ties

This new process highlights the province’s shift toward a more targeted and efficient system for selecting immigrants. Invitations were extended based on several key criteria, including:

  • Alignment of the job offer with the province’s current labour priorities
  • Temporary resident status within Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Personal ties to the province, such as local post-secondary education
  • Offers of employment in rural or remote areas

By focusing on these elements, the province is working to attract candidates who are not only qualified but also more likely to stay and thrive in the region long-term.

Why This Round Matters in Canada’s Changing Immigration Landscape

With federal reductions in immigration allocations affecting provincial programs, this first round of invitations signals Newfoundland and Labrador’s effort to adjust while still meeting workforce needs. The Expression of Interest model allows the province to maintain a responsive selection process even under limited nomination spaces.

This round also supports rural development by giving preference to job offers in non-urban communities—where skilled labour shortages are often most critical.

What’s Next for Economic Immigration to Newfoundland and Labrador?

As the province continues to manage its intake under new national limits, future rounds from the economic immigration pool will be conducted based on provincial priorities and labour needs.

Candidates who were not selected in this draw should continue monitoring their email and stay in the pool, as upcoming rounds will vary based on demand.
