Immigration Announcement
New Canada Climate Action Incentive Payment 2024 is Set to be Released in January
Get ready for a financial boost as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) gears up to dispatch the next Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP) on January 15, 2024. Recognizing the curiosity among newcomers, including international students and work permit holders, it is crucial to know about their eligibility and other qualifying requirements for CRA benefits.
Climate Action Incentive Payment Eligibility and Application for Newcomers
Newcomers, including permanent residents, refugees, and temporary residents (international students and workers), are eligible for the CAIP. However, newcomers need to apply using specific forms, such as Form RC66 for those with children or Form RC151 for those without.
Fortunately, the application process is straightforward, and our blog provides a comprehensive overview of the steps involved.
New permanent residents, international students, and work permit holders are required to apply for the CAIP using the designated forms. Depending on individual circumstances and family composition, newcomers can choose the appropriate form:
Step 1: Fill out all the Forms
- For families with children – Complete and sign Form RC66, the Canada Child Benefits Application, to apply for all family and child benefits, including the GST/HST credit. Additionally, fill out Form RC66SCH, Status in Canada, and Income Information for the Canada Child Benefits Application, providing details about citizenship and residence.
OR
- For individuals without children – Fill out and sign Form RC151, the GST/HST Credit and CAIP Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada.
Step 2: Mailing the Forms
Completed forms can be mailed to the designated tax center. If you are not a newcomer to Canada, there is no requirement to apply separately for the CAIP.
Step 3: Assessing Eligibility
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will assess your eligibility during the filing of your income tax and benefit return. If approved, the CRA will automatically issue the CAIP.
Note: If you have a spouse or common-law partner, only one of you can claim the credit for the family.
The credit will be awarded to the individual whose tax return is filed first, and the amount remains consistent. To remain eligible for Canada Action Incentive Payments, you and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, must continue filing the annual income tax and benefit return.
What is Climate Action Incentive Payment?
The CAIP is a tax-free payment designed to assist individuals and families with the costs associated with federal pollution pricing. We break down the eligibility criteria, highlighting that residents aged 19 or older in CAIP-eligible provinces qualify for this incentive. For those under 19, specific conditions related to marital status or parenthood apply.
Payment Amounts and Dates
The CAIP amount varies based on family conditions and the province of residence. As we approach the January 15 payment date, our blog outlines the specific amounts for provinces such as Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and more. Note: The CAIP is universal, ensuring a consistent benefit regardless of the family’s adjusted net income.
