Manitoba has made its intention of attracting more skilled laborers this year by wasting no time in organizing a draw. Both skilled workers and international student graduates from Manitoba and abroad were given invitations to attend the latest Expression of Interest draw that was held on 2nd January. The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) organized the draw and issued 186 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs) among candidates. The draw targeted candidates from three particular streams, namely Skilled Workers in Manitoba, the

International Education Stream, and the Skilled Workers Overseas. The distribution had the following pattern.
  • Skilled workers in Manitoba: 122
  • International Education: 22
  • Skilled Workers Overseas: 42

The event marked Manitoba’s 80th EOI draw since the inception of the program back in April 2014. 24 of the 186 LAAs that were issued during Manitoba’s latest draw were given to candidates who had an existing profile in the Express Entry database.

Express Entry is the backbone of the current Canadian immigration system. It is responsible for the management of the pool of candidates under the country’s primary Economic-Class immigration categories. The Express Entry candidates are awarded a score on the basis of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) so that everyone has an equal chance. CRS takes human capital factors like work experience, age, education, and language fluency into consideration when marking the candidates. The people with the highest ranks are invited to submit their applications for Canadian permanent residence.

There is no doubt that receiving a provincial nomination gives a substantial boost to the candidate’s profile since it awards an additional 600 CRS points. Express Entry candidates are qualified for provincial nomination only if they have eligible work experience in any one of Manitoba’s in-demand occupations.
