IRCC Extends Canada-Ukraine Emergency Travel Measures: New Opportunities for Ukrainian Nationals
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently made a significant announcement regarding the extension of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) measures. As of August 13, 2024, these measures offer new opportunities for Ukrainian nationals and their family members who are currently in Canada. This extension aims to provide further support to Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
New Work and Study Opportunities Available
Under the extended CUAET measures, Ukrainian nationals who arrive in Canada before March 31, 2024, can now apply for an additional three-year open work permit. The application deadline for these permits is set for March 31, 2025. These work permits will enable Ukrainians to work anywhere in Canada, giving them the flexibility to support themselves and their families during their stay.
In addition to open work permits, eligible Ukrainian nationals can also apply for study permits or visitor records. These measures aim to provide more comprehensive support, allowing Ukrainian nationals to not only work but also pursue educational opportunities in Canada.
Access to Settlement Services
An important aspect of this extension is the continued access to free settlement services for all Ukrainians and their family members currently residing in Canada as temporary residents. These services are designed to help newcomers integrate into Canadian society, providing support in areas such as language training, job search assistance, and community orientation.
This provision of free settlement services until March 31, 2025, highlights Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukrainian nationals during this challenging time. It ensures that those who have been displaced by conflict can access the resources they need to rebuild their lives in Canada.
Application Fees and Procedures
While the IRCC has extended the CUAET measures, applicants will still be required to pay fees when applying for work permits. The fee for a temporary residence work permit is $155, while an open work permit comes with an additional $100 fee. These fees are in place to cover the administrative costs associated with processing applications.
Ukrainian nationals and their family members are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of these extended measures. The IRCC has stated that applications must be submitted by the March 31, 2025, deadline to be considered for the extended permits.
A Significant Response to the Crisis
The extension of the CUAET measures comes in response to the large number of applications received by the IRCC. To date, approximately 1,189,320 applications have been submitted through the CUAET program. This significant response underscores the urgent need for support among Ukrainian nationals, and Canada’s efforts to provide refuge and opportunities for those affected by the crisis.
Conclusion
The IRCC’s extension of the CUAET measures provides a lifeline for Ukrainian nationals and their families. By extending work and study opportunities, along with providing access to essential settlement services, Canada continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting those in need. Ukrainian nationals in Canada are encouraged to take advantage of these extended measures to secure their future and build a new life in Canada.
