Canada Offers Temporary Measures for Individuals Affected by the Crisis in Lebanon
The ongoing crisis in Lebanon has sent shockwaves through communities both locally and around the world. In response to the ongoing difficulties, Canada is taking important steps to support those affected. This compassionate initiative reflects Canada’s humanitarian efforts, ensuring that individuals and families can find safety and stability during this uncertain time.
In a recent announcement, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, unveiled temporary measures aimed at supporting Canadians, permanent residents, and their immediate family members who have left Lebanon. These measures also extend to Lebanese nationals currently in Canada who find themselves unable to return home due to the crisis.
Canada’s Key Temporary Measures
The following temporary measures have been implemented to help affected individuals:
Open Work Permits and Study Permits: Immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who left Lebanon on or after September 29, 2024, can now apply for an open work permit or a study permit. This applies regardless of their nationality and whether they left on flights arranged by Global Affairs Canada or through other means.
No Application Fees: There will be no costs associated with applying for these permits or for extending status in Canada, making it easier for families to stay together and maintain stability during this crisis.
Support for Lebanese Nationals: Lebanese nationals already in Canada can also apply for an open work permit, study permit, or status extension at no cost, providing them with a secure path to work and study in Canada.
Important Considerations
Eligibility: Immediate family members include spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Application Period: These measures will remain in effect until July 31, 2025, or until revoked.
Registration: Canadians currently in Lebanon should register and update their contact information through the Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
Continued Support and Safety Measures
Canada’s humanitarian efforts extend beyond immediate actions. The government continues to advise Canadians to avoid all travel to Lebanon, urging those who can safely leave to do so by commercial means.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has ramped up its capacity to process applications from the region. By streamlining procedures, they aim to expedite assistance for Canadians, permanent residents, and their families in Lebanon.
As Minister Miller noted, “We are deeply concerned for the well-being of people in Lebanon and all those in the surrounding region. We are committed to doing everything we can to help Canadians coming home while also providing temporary safety for Lebanese nationals in Canada who no longer feel safe returning.”
In light of the ongoing crisis, these temporary measures demonstrate Canada’s supporting behavior. By providing pathways for safe residence and work opportunities, Canada supports Lebanon during these trying times. As the situation evolves, it’s essential for affected individuals to stay informed and utilize available resources.
If you or someone you know is impacted by the situation in Lebanon, exploring these temporary measures could provide much-needed relief and support. Stay updated on Canada’s humanitarian initiatives and continue to find ways to help those affected by this crisis.
