Yukon Introduces Temporary Support Measure for Foreign Nationals with Expiring Work Permits

Foreign nationals with expiring work permits in Yukon now have a new opportunity to extend their stay and continue working. The Government of Yukon has introduced a temporary measure allowing eligible individuals to request a letter of support. This letter enables them to apply for a Yukon-specific work permit valid for up to two years through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Application Period and Eligibility Criteria
The intake period for this temporary measure began on March 19, 2025, at 9:00 AM and will close on April 2, 2025, at 4:30 PM Yukon Standard Time. To qualify, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Must have had valid work authorization as of May 16, 2024.
- Must be currently residing and working in Yukon.
- Must have an employer planning to nominate them for permanent residency under the Yukon Nominee Program in 2025 or 2026.
If eligible, the Government of Yukon will issue a support letter to accompany the applicant’s work permit request to IRCC.
Key Benefits of the Temporary Measure
This initiative is part of a temporary public policy authorized by the Government of Canada, designed to streamline the transition of foreign workers to permanent residency. Key benefits include:
- Work permit validity of up to two years, ensuring job continuity in Yukon.
- The ability to remain employed while waiting for Yukon Nominee Program applications in 2025 or 2026.
- A structured pathway for workers seeking permanent residency.
Future Developments for the Yukon Nominee Program
The Department of Economic Development is finalizing details for the Yukon Nominee Program’s 2025 intake. More information about the process and eligibility requirements will be released in the coming weeks.
This measure ensures that skilled foreign workers can continue contributing to Yukon’s workforce while working towards permanent residency. Stay updated with Canada Immigration News for the latest developments on immigration policies and programs in Yukon and across Canada.
