Manitoba’s New Program Offers Lifeline to Temporary Foreign Workers Awaiting Permanent Residency
In a bold step to support foreign workers, Manitoba has introduced a program helping Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) extend their work permits while awaiting permanent residency. Rolled out in September 2024, this initiative offers critical relief to thousands of workers whose permits are nearing expiration. With this new program, TFWs can continue working, providing essential services to the province while their immigration status is resolved.
Extending Work Permits for Temporary Foreign Workers
For many Temporary Foreign Workers, expiring work permits create uncertainty and stress. Manitoba’s latest initiative addresses this concern by enabling TFWs to apply for support letters, allowing them to extend their permits. This measure offers much-needed job security to workers while their permanent residency applications are processed.
This program isn’t just about filling gaps in the labor market—it’s about recognizing the invaluable contributions of TFWs who have integrated into Manitoba’s communities. By supporting these workers, Manitoba strengthens its economy while offering TFWs the stability they deserve.
Program Eligibility: Who Can Apply for Support?
The new program targets Temporary Foreign Workers who are in specific circumstances. To qualify for Manitoba’s work permit support letters, candidates must meet these criteria:
- Hold a valid work permit expiring in 2024, or have a recently expired permit (with proof of extension application).
- Be authorized to work under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations before May 7, 2024.
- Maintain a valid Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) profile as of May 10, 2024.
- Provide proof of continuous employment with the same employer since May 10, 2024, including a letter of employment from their current employer.
Eligible workers can apply online for a support letter, which enables them to secure a Manitoba-specific work permit for up to two years.
A Simple Process to Ensure Stability for Workers
Manitoba has streamlined the process of applying for work permit extensions. The application is straightforward, requiring candidates to provide key documents, including:
A letter of employment from their Manitoba-based employer.
A copy of their current work permit or proof of authorization to work in Canada.
Proof of a valid work permit as of May 7, 2024, or documentation showing they have applied for a restoration of temporary resident status.
Applications from workers whose permits are set to expire in the next 45 days will receive priority, ensuring minimal disruption to their employment.
The new program presents Manitoba’s forward-thinking approach to immigration. Skilled Temporary Foreign Workers, especially in critical sectors like healthcare and agriculture, are vital to Manitoba’s economic future. By offering this pathway, the province aims to retain the talent it already has—individuals who have built lives, careers, and relationships in the community.
Moreover, this program ensures that TFWs can continue working legally while their permanent residency applications are reviewed, providing much-needed security during this critical time. With programs like these, Manitoba is creating a pathway to success for Temporary Foreign Workers.
