As a newcomer in Canada, it is very important to apply for Social Insurance Number as soon as you arrive in the country. Whether you’re a temporary resident or permanent, SIN (Social Insurance Number) should be on your priority list. A Social Insurance Number is a nine-digit number required to work in Canada, file income tax, or get access to government benefits and programs. Here, we will share some insightful information on how to apply for SIN in Canada.

All Canadian citizens, permanent residents (PR), and temporary residents require a Social Insurance Number to work in work in Canada or receive benefits from government programs. If you’re a temporary worker, you will receive a temporary SIN. Your SIN will expire with the expiry of your work permit. Foreign students also require a SIN if they’re looking to work part-time while studying.

How to Apply for SIN in Canada?

One can apply for a Social Insurance Number through one of the three ways: online, in-person at a Service Canada center, or by email. Children aged above 12 can apply for a SIN on their own. In case your kid is under the age of 12 in your province, you can apply for a SIN on their behalf as a parent, legal guardian, or representative.

  • One can apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) online through the Government of Canada website. Newcomers select the “First Social Insurance Number” option from the drop-down menu and fill out the form. And, then upload digital copies of all the original documents, and will receive the SIN by mail within the timeframe of 15 days.
  • One can easily visit the Service Canada center to apply for SIN. All you have to do is book an appointment at any Service Canada Centre to apply for your SIN in person. Always make sure to carry all your original documents and you will receive the SIN at the location.
  • One can email the SIN application form with all the original documents to the following address for the SIN.

Always remember that no photocopies of your documents will be accepted. You will be required to mail your original documents with the application and you will likely receive your SIN along with your original documents, within 25 days of your application.
