Calgary work opportunities

Calgary is known as a place where there is a perfect balance; there is an abundance of work opportunities as well as a fairly carefree way of life. So naturally, it is beginning to attract an influx of new immigrants looking for the perfect place to settle in. Now there is a rise in diversity in the city’s workforce, spread across a wide spectrum of industries.

There is an enviable kind of harmony that has been struck in the way various industries complement each other. For example, for the oil and gas industries to prosper, support from the other sectors like manufacturing, transportation, financial, construction as well as professional and technical services industries is required. The energy industry is also booming and creating a wide variety of jobs in the aforementioned sectors which is adding to the economic welfare of Calgary.

The Economist has ranked Calgary as the fifth most livable city in the world for seven years in a row, as its perks outweigh the cons which are few and far between. A slight downside to this city is the harsh winter when employers find it hard to attract competent talent. But there is a silver lining to this as well; a dearth of talent makes employers pay a premium as an addition to regular wages. Incomes in Calgary are 10-15% higher than those of Vancouver and Toronto because of this reason.

Now that we’ve discussed the serious stuff that Calgary has to offer, let’s talk about how Calgarians like to kick back and relax.

The Calgary Stampede

When it comes down to living life in high spirits, the Calgary Stampede is the busiest time of the year for party-goers from all over Canada and abroad. This festival is not just a rodeo exhibition as it is widely known, but an assortment of fun activities and culinary indulgences that you just cannot cover in a day. Some of the best pancakes with maple syrup are served for free as part of the pre-Stampede breakfast at multiple outlets that surround the rodeo grounds. The Stampede parade is, of course, something a Calgarian just cannot miss with over 30 marching bands, eye-popping floats, nearly a thousand horses and a sea of people.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival

With the advent of summer, Prince’s Island Park serves host to a four day family-friendly festival of musical extravaganza. Six daytime and two evening stages are set on fire, not literally, by over 70 artists spanning multiple genres. Musicians come together to create genre-bending collaborations and share stories about the creation of their most cherished works. There are also dedicated family areas where comedians and spoken word artists entertain the crowds who like to stay away from the bustle.

GlobalFest

Dubbed as the most explosive festival in Alberta, GlobalFest is an all-inclusive celebration of diversity and multiculturalism that is the very definition of Canada’s heritage. The festival concludes with a firework show that lights up the sky in ways unseen anywhere around the world. There are urban arts and culture exhibitions all around Alberta as part of this festival. When the sun goes down, people flood the night market in search of authentic handicrafts and items indigenous to various global cultures while enjoying international live music.
