Express Entry Draw for Healthcare

Canada, often celebrated for its inclusive immigration policies, has again opened its doors to aspiring healthcare professionals in the latest Express Entry draw. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held its third draw of the week on October 26, 2023, welcoming 3,600 skilled healthcare workers to apply for permanent residency in the country. Let’s dive into the details of this exciting opportunity for healthcare professionals.

Breaking Down the Draw

In this category-based selection draw, candidates were required to obtain a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 431 to be eligible for an Invitation to Apply (ITA). The minimum CRS score acts as a benchmark and candidates with scores equal to or higher than this threshold are invited to apply for Express Entry.

This draw follows two earlier draws held in the same week. On October 24, the first was a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draw, in which 1,548 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 776 received ITAs. The relatively high CRS score for PNP candidates is because those nominated by a province automatically receive an additional 600 CRS points, giving them a significant advantage.

The second draw took place on October 25, inviting 300 candidates proficient in French language skills. These candidates needed a minimum CRS score of 486 to qualify.

Express Entry and Category-Based Draws 2023

Canada employs the Express Entry system, a robust application management framework designed to streamline immigration applications across three key economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Under this system, there are two types of draws that determine who is invited to apply for permanent residency.

The standard Express Entry draw, in operation since 2015, starts with eligible candidates entering the Express Entry pool, where each candidate is assigned a CRS score based on factors such as work experience, education, language proficiency, and age. Candidates with CRS scores exceeding the cutoff for a particular draw receive an ITA.

The category-based selection system, on the other hand, aims to address specific labor market gaps in Canada by targeting candidates with traits that align with the country’s current needs. In 2023, IRCC is prioritizing candidates with French-language proficiency or recent work experience in various fields, including healthcare, STEM professions, trades, transport, agriculture, and agri-food.
