Canada’s Summer Employment Programs Announces Opportunities for Students and Employers

For students in Canada, summer jobs are more than just a way to earn money—they provide valuable work experience that can shape future careers. Employers in Prince Edward Island (PEI) have a unique opportunity to hire young talent while benefiting from wage subsidies through two key programs: the Jobs for Youth Program and the Post-Secondary Student Program. These initiatives not only support students but also strengthen local businesses and non-profits by creating meaningful work opportunities.
Overview of PEI’s Student Employment Programs
1. Jobs for Youth Program
- Designed for students aged 15-29.
- Employment duration ranges from 8 to 12 weeks during the summer.
- Students must be returning to school in the fall.
2. Post-Secondary Student Program
- Available for full-time post-secondary students.
- Employment duration ranges from 12 to 18 weeks.
- Priority is given to employers offering experiential learning in a student’s field of study.
Both programs ensure that students gain relevant industry experience while employers receive financial support to offset hiring costs.
Who Can Apply for Funding?
Eligible employers include:
- Non-profits
- Private businesses
- Public sector organizations
Priority is given to employers offering experiential learning related to a student’s academic field, such as health care, skilled trades, and technical professions.
Wage Subsidy Details
Employers are required to offer at least the provincial minimum wage of $16.00/hour. The level of wage reimbursement depends on the employer type:
Employer Type | Wage Reimbursement |
Non-Profit | 100% of minimum wage + 4% vacation pay |
Private Sector | 50% of minimum wage + 4% vacation pay |
Public Sector | 100% of minimum wage + 4% vacation pay |
Only wages and vacation pay qualify for subsidy, while employers must cover other costs such as EI, CPP, and Workers’ Compensation premiums.
Application Process and Deadlines
Employers can apply to one or both programs to hire multiple students. However, funding cannot be combined for a single position. Separate applications are required for each program.
- Application Deadline: April 4, 2025.
- Employers must submit payroll records within 30 days of the project’s completion. Any unused funds must be returned to the funding agency.
Benefits for Employers and Students
These summer employment programs create a win-win scenario. Employers gain access to motivated young workers, while students acquire practical experience that aligns with their career goals. By participating in these initiatives, businesses not only receive financial support but also play a role in shaping Canada’s future workforce.
