Online Passport Renewal

Getting ready for summer travel this year? Canada has made it easier to renew your passport without leaving home. The country’s online passport renewal system has expanded significantly, and for Canadians who qualify, it is now one of the most convenient ways to keep your travel documents up to date. Here is everything you need to know about the current state of Canada online passport renewal, who is eligible, and what to expect in terms of fees and timelines.

How the Online Passport Renewal System Evolved?

The online passport renewal pilot program launched in December 2024, initially available to a small number of eligible Canadians. The rollout was intentionally gradual. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada wanted to test the digital platform carefully, identify any system issues early, and expand access only as capacity and stability allowed.

That approach has paid off. The daily application limit has grown steadily from its initial low cap, reaching 1,000 applications per day by late October 2025, then 1,250 by mid-March 2026, and most recently 1,500 daily applications as of March 31, 2026. IRCC has confirmed that this expansion will continue as testing progresses and capacity grows.

Who Can Use Canada Online Passport Renewal?

Not every Canadian qualifies for the online option. The criteria are specific, and applicants need to meet all of them to be eligible. You must be applying to renew your own passport, with your home and mailing address located in Canada. Your current passport needs to be a standard blue booklet that was issued when you were 16 or older, was valid for either five or ten years, shows your place of birth, and was issued within the last 15 years.

Your passport must either already be expired or set to expire within the next six months. Importantly, you cannot need a passport within the next 20 business days beyond mailing time, since your current passport will be cancelled as soon as you apply. Your name, date of birth, place of birth, and gender identifier must remain the same on the new passport. You will also need to have a digital passport photo ready before you begin.

There are a few additional conditions. You cannot use the online system if your current passport has observations or notes printed in it, such as a name too long to print in full, or if you hold a diplomatic passport. Your passport cannot be seized, surrendered, lost, or stolen.

The Application Window and How Daily Slots Work?

One detail worth knowing before you sit down to apply is how the daily slot system operates. The cap on new applications resets twice each day, at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time. If the daily limit has been reached, you will need to return at one of those reset times to secure a slot. Given the growing demand for Canada online passport renewal, planning ahead and starting your application early in the day is a practical approach.

Updated Fees and the Processing Guarantee

Passport fees were adjusted in March 2026. A 10-year adult passport for applicants renewing from within Canada now costs $163.50, up slightly from the previous $160. A five-year adult passport costs $122.50, up from $120. While no one enjoys a fee increase, the amounts remain reasonable for a document as essential as a passport.

One of the more reassuring aspects of the current system is the government’s processing guarantee. IRCC offers a 30-day or free promise, meaning that if your passport is not processed within 30 days, you are entitled to a refund. This guarantee adds a layer of accountability to the process and gives applicants confidence that their timelines will be respected.

Mail and In-Person Options Remain Available

For Canadians who prefer not to renew online, or who do not meet the eligibility criteria, passport renewal by mail and in person are still available. These channels remain fully operational and are a practical choice for people who are outside the online system’s eligibility window or who simply feel more comfortable with a traditional application process.

What This Means for Summer Travellers

With summer approaching, the expanded Canada online passport renewal capacity comes at a useful time. Families planning trips abroad, Canadians with expiring passports, and anyone who has been putting off a renewal now have a faster, more convenient option available to them. IRCC’s plan to keep adding daily slots as capacity grows suggests that access will only continue to improve in the months ahead.

Canada Immigration News will continue tracking updates to the online passport renewal program, including any future increases in daily capacity or changes to eligibility requirements.
