Recently, the Government of Canada has boosted its immigration initiatives to accommodate more skilled immigrants in the country.

The Government extended invitations to 500 Federal Skilled Trades Class candidates so they can apply for permanent citizenship in Canada. The candidates who were invited have their Comprehensive Ranking Scores starting from 332, which is lower than the usual expectations set by the Government. All of them could apply for Canadian permanent residence during the Express Entry draw which was held on 15th May.

It was a program-specific draw and was the first of its kind to be organized since 24th September, 2018. The objective of the draw was to target candidates who belonged to the Federal Skilled Trades Class. This stream is available for all foreign nationals who have the necessary certificate of qualification. They must be qualified to participate in a skilled trade occupation in the country. Alternatively, they needed to have an eligible job offer in Canada to qualify under the category.

The skilled work experience which can make you eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Class can be categorized based on Canada’s National Occupational Classification. For example, the Minor Group 632 comprises chefs and cooks while the Minor Group 633 includes butchers and bakers. Major Group 72 consists of people working in industrial, electrical, or construction trades. Major Group 73 includes trades related to maintenance and equipment operation. Supervisors and people who have technical jobs in fields such as agriculture, natural resources, and related production fall under Major Group 82.

The Federal Skilled Trades Class is an economic-class immigration program that falls under the Express Entry system. The eligible candidates are given a score under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) which then determines their eligibility.
