Affordable Housing Projects

Access to affordable housing remains a priority in New Brunswick, with both provincial and federal governments stepping up efforts to support residents in need. A total of $18.3 million has been allocated to develop and sustain affordable housing across the province, addressing immediate needs while securing long-term housing stability.

Major Investments in Rural and Urban Housing

A significant portion of the investment, $10 million, will be directed toward the Rural Workforce Housing Pilot. This initiative aims to establish 100 affordable housing units throughout New Brunswick, ensuring more people have access to safe and stable living conditions. Additionally, the federal government has pledged $5 million to further strengthen the program’s reach and effectiveness.

In Saint John, a notable project under the Rental Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program will receive $1.9 million in funding. This initiative is specifically designed to assist landlords in making essential repairs to existing affordable housing units, ensuring continued livability for tenants. Abbey St. Andrew, a residential building in Saint John, is set to benefit from this funding, with 55 of its 96 units supported by rental supplements to maintain affordability for residents.

Further bolstering these efforts, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has committed $1.4 million to the Abbey St. Andrew project, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustaining affordable housing solutions.

Strengthening Communities Through Housing Support

Leaders involved in these housing initiatives emphasize the broader impact on New Brunswick communities. David Hickey, the Minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, highlighted how these investments go beyond just meeting immediate housing demands. They play a key role in strengthening families, boosting local economies, and fostering long-term community growth.

Similarly, Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long underscored the importance of these projects in shaping a vibrant and sustainable future for residents. With these housing developments, the government is not only addressing urgent needs but also paving the way for better living conditions for generations to come.

A Continued Focus on Housing Affordability

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation continues to introduce new initiatives aimed at improving housing affordability across the province. With ongoing partnerships between federal and provincial governments, these efforts are expected to make a lasting difference in addressing housing shortages and ensuring more residents have access to affordable homes.
