Ontario Chosen 9000 Immigrants in 2021

Canadian province Ontario chosen 9000 immigrants for permanent residence in the year 2021, way more than planned. Last year in May, OINP (Ontario Provincial Nominee Program) had announced to welcome 8600 newcomers to the province, from NOC skill level C occupations, that require high school education or specific job training. Before the end of the year, Ontario received 400 nominations from the Canadian government through an in-year reallocation.

This is not the first time Ontario outdid its allocation. In 2020, Ontario nominated 8054 applicants to apply for Canadian permanent residence even it was originally allowed 7350.

The federal government of Canada offers each province a set number of nominations to issue. These nominations support Ontario immigrants applications, that go through the federal government for approval. Provincial nomination informs the federal government that the applicant is fit to support the economic growth of the province or territory. Last year, Ontario’s immigration minister requested the federal government to double up the province’s allocation to support labour scarcity.

Ontario is one of Canada’s majority provinces and territories that participate in the PNP. PNPs allows the government to create immigration programs for people who have in-demand skills and have any connections to the region such as study experience, work, or wish to invest in a business that could thrive in the labour market.
