Canadian immigration has won over the hearts of thousands across the world with its friendly and effective policies. The number of prospective immigrants considering Canada as their future destination has increased tremendously in the last few years.

With its universal healthcare policies and accessible citizenship laws, Canada has managed to climb up the ranks as per the Migration Integration Policy Index or MIPEX, which is an international benchmark to rate integration policies.

2020 MIPEX

The 2020 MIPEX report reveals that Canada secured the fourth-highest score among 52 countries. Back in 2015, Canada had placed sixth on the list. It has managed to improve its rank by two spots, presumably because of its efforts to improve healthcare access for asylum seekers and update the 2017 Citizenship Act. The countries preceding Canada in the ranking are Sweden, Finland and Portugal.

MIPEX takes into account how convenient the immigration and integration process is for candidates. Ryerson University’s Anna Triandafyllidou, who is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration, says that the MIPEX scores are crucial to understanding how the immigration policies are affecting newcomers trying to settle in Canada. The index tracks the country’s performance over the years so that it is easier to introduce improvements.

Canada’s Performance

According to the report, Canada’s anti-discrimination policies are its greatest strength. The multiculturalism policies listed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms add to Canada’s inclusivity. Since permanent residents can become citizens quickly, they get voting rights soon. Canada’s education system is worthy of praise because of its multicultural facets and equity policies. However, family reunification efforts were just rated as “favourable” according to the report.
