Mexican Citizens Visiting Canada

Canada and Mexico have fostered a robust diplomatic partnership spanning eight decades, with a focus on bolstering economic competitiveness and fostering bilateral cooperation. To facilitate seamless travel and strengthen ties between the two nations, Canada has announced adjustments to its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

Revised Travel Authorization for Mexican Citizens

Effective February 29, 2024, Mexican citizens holding a valid US non-immigrant visa or a Canadian visa issued within the past decade, and traveling by air on a Mexican passport, can now apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). This streamlined process aims to maintain visa-free travel for the majority of Mexican citizens while ensuring the integrity of Canada’s immigration system.

Continued Access to Work and Study Permits

The application process for work or study permits for Mexican citizens remains unchanged. Individuals seeking employment opportunities in Canada will retain access to various labor pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Strengthening Immigration Pathways

Canada remains committed to fostering travel, tourism, and business exchanges with Mexico. Efforts are underway to enhance regular immigration pathways, in collaboration with provincial and territorial authorities, to ensure managed migration and provide support to individuals in need of protection.

Modernizing Bilateral Agreements

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) serves as a prime example of mutually beneficial migration between Canada and Mexico. Plans to modernize this program include expanding opportunities for Mexican workers in year-round primary agriculture and seasonal food processing sectors.

Monitoring and Adjusting Policies

Canada continually assesses the impact of its visa policies and asylum claim trends to uphold the integrity and sustainability of its immigration systems. Adjustments to travel requirements are made in response to evolving challenges and to alleviate pressure on immigration resources.
