Temporary Residents Given More Time To Regain Residency Status

The coronavirus pandemic has left temporary residents of Canada greatly inconvenienced. With lockdowns and travel restrictions plaguing people worldwide, many people simply failed to adapt their plans accordingly. 

Temporary residents looking to extend their stay in Canada had to face many obstacles. Now, the Canadian immigration department is granting them another opportunity to get the extension they want.

New policy

The webpage of the Canadian government states that temporary residents whose status expired sometime between January 30, 2020 and May 31, 2021 will have some time to restore their status. They will be able to submit their applications restoring their temporary resident status until August 30, 2021.

Canada had introduced a public policy back in July 2020 allowing an extension to temporary residents whose status expired. Workers, visitors and students were supposed to have extra time until December 31, 2020 to submit their application for status restoration.

Who will benefit?

As per the new policy, all applicants who held a valid status in Canada between January 30, 2020 and May 31, 2021 will be eligible to take advantage of this leniency. Some other requirements are that they must not have exited Canada even once since their arrival and they must have paid the processing fees already.

Candidates who have managed to secure work permits and job offers will also benefit from this policy if they have been waiting for their application to be processed. The temporary workers who receive approval through this new policy could begin their employment as they wait for IRCC to pass a verdict.
