Humanitarian Efforts

Canada has continued its humanitarian efforts to support Afghan refugees fleeing the crisis in their homeland. Over the past month, an additional 20,605 Afghans and their families have arrived in Canada through the Special Immigration Measures Program (SIMP). This brings the total number of Afghan refugees welcomed by Canada to a significant figure.

Canada’s commitment to providing safe haven for Afghan refugees has been widely recognized. The country has played a crucial role in helping those fleeing the Taliban regime find a new home and rebuild their lives.

Key Highlights

  • The influx of Afghan refugees demonstrates Canada’s ongoing efforts to support those in need.
  • The Canadian government has provided essential services and resources to help Afghan refugees settle into their new lives.
  • Canadians have shown overwhelming generosity and compassion towards Afghan refugees, offering support and welcoming them into their communities.

A History of Humanitarian Aid

Canada has a long history of involvement in Afghanistan, dating back to the Soviet invasion in 1979. The country has previously welcomed Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban regime in the 1990s. The recent resurgence of the Taliban and the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan has led to another wave of refugees seeking safety in Canada.

Pre-2021: Prior to the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, Canada had already resettled a significant number of Afghan refugees through various programs.

Surge in 2021-2022: Following the Taliban’s takeover, Canada launched a special immigration program to prioritize the resettlement of Afghans who had assisted the Canadian government. This led to a significant increase in the number of Afghan refugees arriving in Canada.

Ongoing Efforts: Canada continues to process applications and welcome Afghan refugees, with a focus on those who are most vulnerable, such as women, girls, and minorities.

Immigration Programs for Afghans

Two main programs were established to assist Afghan nationals: the Special Immigration Measures Program (SIMP) for those who aided the Canadian government and the Humanitarian Program for Afghan nationals seeking refugee status.

Apart from these two, there is the Humanitarian Program which allows Afghan nationals to apply for refugee status in Canada and a pathway for extended family members of former interpreters who had resettled in Canada.
