Canada Refugee Claims Fall to Two-Year Low as Case Processing Reaches Record Pace

Canada refugee claims declined significantly in May 2026, according to newly released data from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). The Refugee Protection Division received 2,863 new refugee protection claims during the month, marking one of the lowest monthly intake levels seen in recent years and a sharp decrease from the 16,793 claims reported in May 2024.

At the same time, the IRB finalized 8,977 cases, helping reduce the overall refugee claims backlog to 286,970 pending cases. Monthly intake dropped from 6,490 claims in January to just 2,863 in May. Compared with the peak claim volumes experienced during 2024, the reduction is substantial and may ease pressure on Canada’s refugee determination system.

Record Number of Cases Finalized

One of the most notable developments in the May data is the significant increase in case finalizations.
