Immigration Measures for Sudanese Nationals

The Government of Canada has extended its temporary immigration measures for individuals affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. These measures initially introduced to provide support, will now remain in place until October 27, 2025. The extension ensures that Sudanese nationals and their family members can continue to access critical immigration services free of charge.

Extended Support for Affected Individuals

Under the extended policy, the following provisions will continue:

  • Travel Documents and Citizenship Certificates: Canadian citizens and permanent residents impacted by the Sudan crisis can still apply for replacement travel documents and citizenship certificates without any fees.
  • Work and Study Permits: Sudanese nationals residing in Canada can apply for work permits, study permits, and status extensions, all free of charge.
  • Family Sponsorship Pathway: Family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who fled Sudan on or after April 15, 2023, and arrived in Canada before July 15, 2023, can continue applying for work permits, study permits, and permanent residency under the family class at no cost.
  • Extension of Temporary Resident Status: Eligible Sudanese nationals can now also apply for a temporary resident permit or extend their current temporary status in Canada without paying any fees.

Changes to the Public Policy on Fee Waivers

While many of the initial benefits remain available, fee waivers for overseas Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) applications and Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) considerations have expired as of October 27, 2024. However, Sudanese nationals currently in Canada can still benefit from the priority processing of immigration applications.

What This Means for Sudanese Nationals in Canada

These measures provide significant relief for Sudanese nationals affected by the crisis, allowing them to maintain legal status in Canada and access necessary services without financial strain. The extension of the Sudan temporary measures reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to support those impacted by global conflicts, ensuring their safety and stability. For more details and updates, individuals are encouraged to check the official Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website regularly.
