Canada has decided to provide a PR pathway for asylum claimants

There is no doubt that the pandemic has been life-changing for all us. We are still getting used to this new way of life, and many things are still uncertain. The new normal is scary, and most people still prefer to stay indoors. Wearing masks has become the norm. It is scary to think about how we would have fared if it weren’t for the invaluable services provided by selfless healthcare workers.

Front-line workers are working around the clock to keep us safe. It is important that we acknowledge their contribution and thank them for their efforts. Canada has decided to reward front-line workers rewarded for their exceptional services. The country has decided to introduce a pathway to permanent residence that will benefit asylum claimants who belong to the healthcare sector.

Details of the new pathway

This measure is a public recognition of the valuable services that have been rendered by health workers during this pandemic. Being essential workers, they have stood up to the task and prioritised public health over their own safety.

Immigration minister, Marco Mendicino, has said that the government wants to recognise the extraordinary contributions made by asylum claimants who are working in the health-care sector, especially in long-term care centres.

The current circumstances require exceptional measures to make them feel safe and secure in the country. This announcement will be applicable to all front-line workers who are responsible for providing direct care to patients while claiming asylum. The province of Quebec has also announced a similar program.

Since Canada is committed to family reunification, the family members of the applicant can also benefit from the program.
