Northwest Territories Raises 2026 Immigration Allocation to 300 Nominees

Good news out of Canada’s North. The Northwest Territories just secured 103 additional nominee spots from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, pushing its 2026 allocation to 300. That’s a meaningful jump, and it says something important about where Canada sees opportunity right now.

This increase restores the territory’s allocation to 2024 and 2025 levels, following sustained advocacy from territorial officials. Why This Increase Matters

Allocations aren’t just numbers on a government spreadsheet. Each one represents a real pathway to permanent residency for a skilled worker, a francophone professional, or an entrepreneur willing to build a life in the territory. When allocations shrink, so does opportunity. When they grow, communities gain workers they badly need.

The Northwest Territories fully used its allocation in both 2024 and 2025. That’s a strong signal. Demand exists, and the territory has the infrastructure to process applicants efficiently. A New Draw, Added Fast

This draw applies to the Employer-Driven Stream, one of three pathways under the NTNP. The others, Francophone and Business, continue to run on a first-come-first-served basis rather than through the Expression of Interest system.

How the Expression of Interest System Works

Since February 2026, the Employer-Driven Stream has used an Expression of Interest model. Candidates submit a profile, then wait to be invited from the pool during a scheduled draw. This system replaced the territory’s older intake process, following public engagement sessions held in September 2025. Employers, prospective immigrants, and community members all asked for the same thing: a clearer, fairer way to apply.

Two Expression of Interest draws have already taken place in 2026. With August 26 now added, the territory will run four draws this year. A final draw is scheduled for September 25, with a profile submission cutoff of September 22. Three Pathways, One Territory

The NTNP offers three distinct routes to nomination.

The Employer-Driven Stream connects territorial employers with skilled foreign workers who can fill roles the local labour market can’t. This is the stream now running through Expression of Interest draws.

The Francophone Stream supports French-speaking candidates who want to settle in the territory, strengthening one of the North’s smaller but vibrant linguistic communities.

The Business Stream is built for entrepreneurs and investors ready to establish or purchase a business in the territory, contributing capital and jobs to a region hungry for both.

The territory is hosting two online information sessions this month. One on Tuesday, August 18, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., with registration closing the day before at 5:00 p.m. The other on Thursday, August 20, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., with registration closing at noon the day prior. Both sessions are open to employers and prospective foreign nationals who want a direct line to program staff.

An allocation increase this size, restoring what was effectively cut, doesn’t happen without real advocacy behind it.
