International Experience Canada Program Welcomes Over 6000 Young Workers
Imagine packing your bags, landing in Canada, and spending the next year or two building skills, making connections, and discovering what it means to live and work in one of the world’s most celebrated countries. That is exactly what thousands of young people from around the world get to do through the International Experience Canada Program.
From April 25 to May 22, 2026, Canada issued 6,223 invitations to young foreigners to apply for an open work permit through the IEC. This round of draws brought the total number of invitations issued in 2026 to an impressive 73,392. These numbers reflect Canada’s continuing desire to attract young, motivated workers from across the globe.
What is the International Experience Canada Program?
International Experience Canada, commonly known as IEC, is a federal program that allows young people between the ages of 18 and 35 from eligible countries to work in Canada temporarily. Depending on the bilateral agreements Canada has with different countries, participants may qualify for one of three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, or International Co-op.
The most popular of these is the Working Holiday category, which offers the most flexibility. Participants receive an open work permit, meaning they can work for any employer in any field across Canada. There is no job offer required to apply. This makes the program one of the most accessible ways for young people to experience Canadian work culture firsthand.
Who Got Invited in the April to May 2026 Draws?

- Australia: 1,071 invitations
- United Kingdom: 1,064 invitations
- France: 904 invitations
- Korea: 969 invitations
- Germany: 482 invitations
- Italy: 292 invitations
- New Zealand: 257 invitations

How Many Spots Are Still Available?
As of May 22, 2026, a total of 31,606 candidates were registered in the pools and waiting for an invitation. With the 2026 season still ongoing, there is still time for eligible candidates to register and await their turn.
Take the United Kingdom Working Holiday stream as an example. The quota for this stream is 9,330. As of May 22, 13,426 invitations had already been issued, which actually exceeds the original quota. This happens because some candidates decline their invitation or let it expire, and Canada issues additional invitations to ensure the quota is properly filled. With 553 spots still listed as available and 1,130 candidates in the pool, there is still a real chance for UK applicants to receive an invitation.
Why IEC Matters for Long-Term Immigration?
This program is more than a gap year adventure. Many participants use their IEC work permit to gain Canadian work experience, which can later be used to qualify for permanent residence. The Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry, for example, requires at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada. An IEC open work permit gives you the perfect opportunity to clock that experience.
At Canada Immigration News, we see the IEC program as one of the smartest entry points into the Canadian immigration system for young people. You arrive, you work, you build connections, you improve your language skills, and you lay the groundwork for a permanent future in Canada.
Canada genuinely wants young, energetic workers from around the world. The IEC program is one of the clearest expressions of that intention. If you are eligible, there has never been a better time to register.
How to Register for International Experience Canada?
To participate in the International Experience Canada program, you must be a citizen of an eligible country, meet the age requirement (generally 18 to 35, though some countries set the upper limit at 30), and create a candidate profile through the official immigration website. Once your profile is accepted, you will be placed in the pool for your country and category and wait for an invitation in the next round of draws.
If you receive an invitation, you will have a limited number of days to apply for your work permit. Missing that deadline means your invitation expires and you must wait for the next round. Plan ahead and have your documents ready.
