Language Proficiency Test Accepted For Canadian Immigration

Canadian Immigration

Every category of economic immigration has a mandate for a language test to apply. The test version and score will entirely depend upon the specific program you will be applying under. For Canadian immigration, you are required to offer language test results from authorized test providers in English.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program), are two authorized test providers. If you wish to take your language test in French, then you can go ahead with TEF.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada do have a preferred test as all three tests are evaluated equally. One can pick any according to their convenience. No matter which language proficiency test you choose, always make sure that the results are from within the last two years. IELTS, CELPIP, and TEF all offer a score for the four language abilities: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

When we are thinking of Canadian immigration, language proficiency must be taken as a priority. An applicant must have a certain level of fluency in English or French and hold proof of language level validated by the Canadian Language Benchmark. Each program has a different grade requirement, here we have shown a breakdown of all the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) requirements as per the categories:

  • FSWP (Federal Skilled Worker Program): Must have a minimum CLB of 7 in skills like writing, reading, listening, and speaking
  • FSTP (Federal Skilled Trade Program): Must have a minimum CLB of 4 for reading and writing, while for listening and speaking the minimum CLB must be 5
  • CEC (Canadian Experience Class): Must have a minimum CLB of 7 in skills like writing, reading, listening, and speaking, for jobs in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) 0 or A and, at least CLB 5 for professions in the NOC B.
