Fastest Population

In recent months, Canada has experienced an extraordinary surge in population growth, with the three months leading up to October 1, 2023, marking the fastest quarterly increase since 1957. During this period, the population rose by 430,635 people, reflecting a significant 1.1% growth from July 1. At the forefront of this surge are temporary foreign workers, international students, and new permanent residents, collectively driving the nation’s demographic transformation.

Immigration Dominance in Growth

This remarkable growth is predominantly attributed to immigration, which accounts for an overwhelming 96% of the recent historic surge. As Canada’s population ages, natural population growth diminishes, making immigration a pivotal factor in sustaining this unprecedented growth. In the third quarter alone, Canada welcomed 107,972 new permanent residents, contributing substantially to the overall increase.

From January to September 2023, immigration reached 79.8% of the annual target set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), amounting to 371,299 new permanent residents.

Record Rise in Temporary Residents

The surge extends beyond permanent residents, including a notable increase in non-permanent residents. By October 1, the total non-permanent resident population reached 2,511,437, with an impressive quarterly increase of 312,758. This rise in temporary residents in Canada, the highest quarterly spike since 1971, underscores the attractiveness of Canada for individuals seeking work, study opportunities, and refuge.

The provincial landscape mirrors this growth, with Alberta, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario surpassing the national growth rate, while there is a decline in Atlantic Immigration numbers.

Canada’s current immigration-driven growth is unprecedented, setting historic records in population expansion. As the nation welcomes diverse talents, international students, and new residents, the landscape of Canadian society continues to evolve. The strategic immigration levels plan for 2024-2026 indicates Canada’s commitment to sustaining this growth trajectory, making it an exciting time for those considering making Canada their new home.
