Canada Open Work Permits

Canada continues to strengthen its labour market by supporting workers who are already contributing to local communities. The latest temporary public policy from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada allows eligible foreign nationals in Manitoba, Alberta, and Yukon to apply for Canada Open Work Permits when they hold a support letter issued by their provincial government.

This pathway offers stability to workers who have already proven their value to employers and communities and who are preparing for long term settlement through the Provincial Nominee Program process. It ensures that skilled individuals can continue living and working in Canada while awaiting the next steps in their immigration journey. This temporary public policy is available until December 31 2025.

Why This Matters for Workers and Employers

Many foreign workers build their careers in Canada long before they receive permanent residence. The new Canada Open Work Permits measure provides them with greater flexibility and security.

Workers can:

  • Continue supporting their families in Canada
  • Change employers if needed
  • Take full-time jobs without delays in authorization
  • Gain Canadian work experience that strengthens future immigration applications

Employers benefit as well:

  • Reduced turnover for trained workers
  • Stronger workforce and continuity
  • Faster recruitment when workers are already in the province

  5. Apply online for the work permit

Applicants must also maintain a valid temporary resident status at the time of decision.

Length and Conditions of the Work Permit

  • The work permit cannot be extended under this same policy
  • The exact validity may be limited if the passport expires sooner

Spouses or common-law partners may also apply for an open work permit, and dependent children may apply for open work authorization or study permits depending on their age and situation.

Benefits for Newcomers Planning for Permanent Residency

This policy strongly supports foreign workers who are progressing through the Provincial Nominee Program in their province. It allows applicants to maintain employment while awaiting nomination or final federal processing, which strengthens long-term settlement outcomes.

Workers gain:

  • Stability
  • Work experience in Canada
  • Stronger case for nomination

Communities benefit through:

  • Continuity of essential labour supply
  • Growth of local economies
  • Stable family and workforce retention

This approach reflects Canada’s people-first immigration strategy.

Canada Open Work Permits Strengthen Canada’s Workforce and Communities

The Canada Open Work Permits option available through Manitoba, Alberta, and Yukon is a valuable pathway for foreign nationals who are already active contributors to Canada’s labour market. It reinforces economic stability for workers, employers, and communities while supporting long term immigration goals. This policy is in place until December 31 2025, which means eligible applicants are encouraged to plan and apply in a timely manner. Stay tuned and ahead with latest Canada Immigration News!
