Skilled Workers From the United States Are Coming to Canada

The last two years have seen foreign-born U.S. skilled workers receiving the maximum number of invitations to resettle in Canada permanently. Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) published a new study that shows how skilled workers from the other side of the border are slowly shifting to Canada.

What did the study find?

Between 2017 and 2019, the number of U.S. residents entering Canada via the Express Entry system has increased by 75 percent. The new data finds that this growth rate is significantly higher as compared to other countries.

The analysis is based on the statistics cited by the Canadian government in the latest Express Entry Year-End Report 2019. It shows that the total number of U.S. residents receiving benefits from Express Entry has risen by 75 percent between the last two years. When the percentage increase is taken into account, it comes to more than or even double than the rate observed for other countries.

The Express Entry system assigns CRS scores to candidates and uses them to rank eligible candidates. The scores are evaluated on the basis of certain factors such as age, skilled work experience education, and language proficiency among others.

Possible causes:

The CSET data brief finds that the boost in the number of U.S. residents succeeding under the Express Entry system can be attributed to two factors. Firstly, more American residents are now interested in attaining permanent residence in Canada. Secondly, an increasing number of American residents who want permanent residence in Canada are being able to fulfill the scoring criteria of Express Entry.

Zachary Arnold, who is the author of the analysis, finds that this growth in successful submissions can also be traced back to non-U.S. citizens, whose numbers have risen by 128 percent between these two years.
