Canada’s Immigration Bounce: A Rise of 4.3% in October, aiming to Exceed Annual Targets
After a four-month dip, Canada’s monthly immigration roared back to life in October, with a 4.3% surge, welcoming 33,570 new permanent residents, as per the latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This rebound comes after hitting a low of 29,550 in April and marks a promising trend as the country gears up to potentially surpass its ambitious annual immigration targets.
In a positive twist, Canada witnessed a 4.3% rise in monthly immigration, with October welcoming 33,570 new permanent residents. This follows a steady decline over four consecutive months, hitting a low of 32,180 in September. Analyzing the year-to-date figures, Canada seems poised to exceed its immigration targets, setting the stage for a significant influx of newcomers.
Tracking the Rollercoaster
Having bounced back from a low of 29,550 in April, May showcased a robust surge, reaching 46,000 new permanent residents. However, subsequent months witnessed a gradual decline, touching 35,075 in August and dropping to 32,180 in September. This fluctuation reflects a 30.3% decrease in the monthly immigration rate over the past five months.
Impressive Year-to-Date Figures
From January to October 2023, Canada welcomed 388,035 new permanent residents. If this trend continues, the country could surpass its 2023 target of 465,000 immigrants, putting it ahead of schedule to achieve the 2024 goal of 485,000 newcomers – a 4.5% increase.
Canada’s Immigration Targets
Under the 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan, Ottawa initially set a target of 465,000 new permanent residents for 2023. However, the current pace indicates Canada might end the year by welcoming nearly 4.5% more newcomers than planned. Looking ahead to the 2024-2026 plan, Canada aims to welcome 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025 and maintain that figure in 2026, totaling 1.485 million immigrants over three years.
Ontario Remains a Magnet
Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, remains a magnet for the majority of newcomers, as 177,550 immigrants chose to establish themselves there in the initial 10 months of 2023. This constitutes 43.8% of the total immigrant influx to Canada during this timeframe.
Analyzing immigration distribution among provinces, Ontario distinguishes itself with 89,135 new permanent residents arriving through diverse programs. Other provinces, including Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta, also prominently attract newcomers. Despite Quebec’s initial intent to cap immigration at 50,000 for the year, the province is on track to welcome 57,552 new permanent residents based on trends observed in the first 10 months of 2023.
